What is Creative Commons?
Creative Commons is a nonprofit organization that aims to reduce legal barriers to creativity through a model of flexible copyright, which is based on the framework of existing copyright. This new model offers alternatives for creative people to share their work freely and safely.
was founded by Lawrence Lessig, law professor at Stanford University who studies the phenomena social and cultural aspects of cyberspace.
This organization's main objective is to offer licenses that facilitate the distribution and use of content. These licenses help preserve the copyrights and invited to use their work under the scheme of "some rights reserved". The author is one who, in a free, decide under what parameters allows the use of their works.
To facilitate the use of these licenses, it also created a graphic to the artist and common user can easily understand the terms of such licenses. At the same time provides a set of tools that allow (only the machines connected to the network) know the parameters of the licenses under which authorizes the use of content.
Although the licenses were originally written in English, as time has gone by have been translated into different languages. Already, several countries are involved with this new model (Chile, Argentina, Spain and Mexico), this has been achieved through the International Commons project.
